Jamaica
Jamaica lifts its policy rate to 6%. Energy and food keep costs under pressure.
The 50-basis-point increase took effect on September 29. Annual inflation reached 7.9% in August.

The fact
The Bank of Jamaica announced a unanimous 50-basis-point increase to 6.0% on September 28, effective September 29. August annual inflation reached 7.9%. The bank identified imported energy and agricultural pressures as factors behind persistent inflation.
The ALTA EDICIÓN view
For a company importing fuel or food, the relevant bill combines inputs, currency and financing. Passing costs into prices can protect unit margins while reducing sales volume. Higher nominal revenue alone does not establish an improvement in the underlying business.
The next signal
Track food and energy inflation, margins and actual lending rates. The next policy announcement is scheduled for November 18. Our reading would weaken with sustained input-cost and financing relief; one favorable month would not be enough.
