ADVANS News Now — October 1, 2026 English transcript of the Spanish-language episode. Spanish audio: Alejandro, synthetic voice.
This is ADVANS News Now. Five stories. Five minutes. Thursday, October 1, 2026. Today: Japanese businesses, fuel supplies, the outlook for the Dominican Republic and Colombia, artificial intelligence, and design. An edition from the ADVANS editorial desk, with Alejandro's synthetic voice. We distinguish new data from yesterday's announcements and the signals that still need to be tested.
First. Japan enters October with different signals across sectors. The Bank of Japan's Tankan survey raises the business conditions index for large manufacturers to 24 points, from 22 in June. Among large non-manufacturers, it falls from 37 to 35. This index compares favorable and unfavorable responses: it does not mean the economy grew by 24%. Our interpretation: an industrial improvement should not be mistaken for a broad-based recovery. Investment plans still need to become actual spending. The next monetary policy meeting is scheduled for October 29 and 30. The survey adds evidence, but does not, on its own, tell us what the central bank will decide.
Second. In energy, more crude oil in storage does not mean more fuel is available. The US Energy Information Administration reported yesterday that commercial crude inventories rose by 900,000 barrels in the week ending September 25. Distillate inventories, however, fell by 2.3 million barrels and stood 14% below the five-year average. This category includes diesel and other fuels. For transport and industry, our interpretation is to look at refined products and their regional inventories as well. An aggregate figure can conceal differences that matter for costs. The next check will be the new weekly report. These numbers do not establish that prices will rise.
Third. Latin America and the Caribbean: following developments in the Dominican Republic and Colombia. In its monetary policy report published yesterday, the Dominican central bank projects growth of around 4.5% this year and between 4.5% and 5% in 2027. It expects inflation to return to its target range in the final quarter, with risks still tilted to the upside. These are forecasts, not results. In Colombia, yesterday's increase took the policy rate to 12.25%. The next reference points will be the minutes on October 5 and September's consumer price index, scheduled for October 7 by DANE. Our regional interpretation: test the policy arguments against new inflation and activity data, without assuming that both countries will follow the same path.
Fourth. Artificial intelligence meets a physical risk. Microsoft Research published research yesterday seeking to anticipate how solar storms could affect the US power grid. According to its developers, the system estimates local risks 30 to 60 minutes in advance. It combines solar-wind information with characteristics of the terrain and the grid. It still requires validation with operators before use in real-world conditions. Our interpretation: an alert is valuable for the decision it enables. The next test is to measure useful warning time, false alarms, and the costs of taking action. A promising research result does not, on its own, demonstrate effective protection or savings for businesses.
Fifth. Executive Life: design and mobility. In a press release dated September 30, BMW introduced the new 3 Series, with a shared visual identity across the electric i3 and gasoline versions with mild-hybrid technology. The manufacturer also announced a plug-in hybrid for 2027. The changes include a new arrangement of displays and controls. Our interpretation: preserving a recognizable experience can make choosing between technologies easier. But that promise must be tested against usability, equipment, and availability in each country. A global introduction does not mean immediate delivery in the Dominican Republic or Colombia. We will follow local conditions before turning the announcement into a product recommendation.
